About Us

The Somerset Building Preservation Trust (SBPT) was set up and formally registered as a charity in 1988 to save “at risk” historic buildings to give them a sustainable use within communities.

Somerset Building Preservation Trust is registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales and is a company limited by guarantee.

SBPT is run by a board of up to 18 trustees, including councillors nominated by the local authorities with just one part time member of staff.

The Trust relies solely on the generosity of its supporters, through membership subscriptions, donations, fund raising activities and legacies.

What We Do

There are well over 11,500 buildings in Somerset listed as being of special architectural or historic interest. Most are well maintained but a small number have deteriorated to such an extent they are in danger of being lost forever. This is where we come in.

The Trust –

  • raises funds

  • gets plans drawn up

  • deals with the legal work

  • appoints a contractor

  • oversees conservation work

SBPT then hands the building over to the local community or charitable trusts who are responsible for their future care and management.
